This returning client in Taunton wanted to bring their home back to how it should have been by removing modern coverings and reinstating a traditional pine floor.
The project involved both structural work and full floor restoration, particularly in the front room where no floor remained, just exposed joists. The client also wanted the front room to be insulated to create a warmer space.
The Starting Point
- Original pine flooring in need of TLC
- Front room stripped back to bare joists
- Signs of wear and previous alterations
- Structural issues near the entrance

The Process
Structural Repairs and Preparation
Before any flooring could go down, we carried out essential repairs:
- Repaired and strengthened existing joists
- Installed a wall plate near the front door
- Added sister joists, bolted securely for long-term support
- Ensured the structure was level and ready for flooring
This stage is often overlooked but it’s what guarantees the floor will last a lifetime.

Insulation & Breathability
To improve comfort and performance, we installed:
- Breathable vapour barrier
- Mineral wool insulation between joists
This setup:
- Improves thermal efficiency
- Reduces drafts
- Maintains airflow to prevent moisture issues in older properties

Reclaimed Pine Installation
To stay true to the property’s character:
- Fitted reclaimed pine floorboards
- Fixed using traditional flooring nails
- Carefully fitted boards for a consistent, natural look

Sanding & Finishing
Once installed, all areas were:
- Professionally sanded
- Stained using Morrells Walnut
- Finished with Bona Mega Matt lacquer
The result is a rich, warm tone while keeping a natural, low-sheen finish.
The Result
The before and after transformation was dramatic and the client was thrilled with the outcome.
- Seamless transition between old and new areas
- Structurally sound and insulated floor
- Beautiful, character rich pine brought back to life
