We had the privilege of carrying out maintenance work in a remarkable historic building in Ottery St Mary, dating back to the 14th century.
The oak floors had been well cared for over the years but required professional cleaning and re-waxing to restore their depth, protection, and natural sheen.
Heritage flooring preparation
With heritage flooring, preparation is everything.
We began by:
- Cleaning the surface with solvent-based products to break down built up dirt and old residues
- Removing contaminants embedded in the grain
- Ensuring the surface was ready for further treatment

Surface keying
To ensure proper adhesion of the new finish:
- The floor was lightly abraded
- This created a key for the wax
- It also refined the surface and enhanced overall cleanliness

Traditional wax application
We then reinstated the finish using traditional methods:
- Wax was carefully melted for optimal consistency
- Applied evenly using lambswool applicators
- Buffed to achieve a rich, even sheen
This approach enhances the natural character of oak while maintaining a breathable, sympathetic finish which is ideal for historic interiors.

The result
- Revitalised colour and grain definition
- Even, soft sheen across the entire floor
- Continued protection for a surface that has lasted centuries
While the building itself commands attention, the floor now complements it as it should, quietly, but beautifully.
