Oak Floor Restoration in Sherborne

This renovated family home in Sherborne had been opened by removing a dividing wall between the kitchen and dining room. The aim was to make the oak floor feel like one continuous surface, while working carefully around a large kitchen islands that had to stay in place.

Time on site: 5 days
Area: Sherborne, Dorset
Floor size: 40m²

The starting point

Removing the wall had left a gap where the two rooms met. A simple patch would have stood out, so we lifted full boards on either side and carefully teethed the two floors together. This allowed the new section to follow the existing board pattern helping the floor read naturally from one space into the other.

Wood Flooring Installation

Working around the island

The kitchen islands was too large to move, so we protected the surrounding worktops, removed the kickboards and sanded carefully right up to the base. This takes longer than working in an empty room, but it avoidds leaving a border of old finish around the cabinests and gives the whole floor a consistent look.

The sanding process

We sanded the floor in stages, using different machines for the open areas, edges and final finishing passes:

  • Lagler Hummel belt sander: P60, P80, P100
  • Lagler flip disc sander: P60, P80, P100
  • Bona FlexiSand with mesh: P80, P120

Choosing the finish

The client wanted a natural finish that would suit the open-plan space without looking too heavy or glossy. We used Treatex Hardwax Oil with a hardener additive in every coat, giving the oak a soft, natural appearance while adding the extra durability needed for a busy kitchen floor.

The result

The kitchen and dining room now flow together as one continuous oak floor. The area where the wall once stood blends in with the original boards, and the floor has been sanded and finished neatly right up to the island for a clean, consistent result
