We recently completed a full floorboard restoration project in Sidmouth, East Devon for a returning customer who wanted to restore their original pine flooring.
The boards had never been sanded before and were showing significant signs of age, including surface wear, gaps, damage, and old pipework alterations.
Our goal was to fully restore the floor while keeping the natural character of the original timber.
The Brief
The customer wanted to:
- Restore original pine floorboards rather than replace them
- Repair damaged and broken boards
- Fill gaps for a cleaner, more finished look
- Apply a warm, natural stain
- Achieve a durable, matte finish

Our Approach
This project required more than just sanding – it involved detailed restoration work to bring the floor back to a high standard.
Repairs & Preparation
- Damaged and broken boards were carefully repaired and replaced where needed
- Gaps between boards were filled using pine slivers for a seamless finish
- Old pipe holes were filled using a strong, durable two-part filler
- Joists were inspected addressed before reinstating boards

Sanding Process
We carried out a full professional sanding process to remove years of wear, dirt, and old surface damage. This revealed the raw pine beneath and created a smooth, even base ready for finishing.

Staining & Finishing
To enhance the appearance of the timber, we applied:
- Morrells Classic Light Oak stain – adding warmth and depth while keeping a natural look
- Bona Mega Matt lacquer – providing a durable, low-sheen protective finish ideal for everyday use

The Result
The transformation completely revitalised the space.
What was once a tired, uneven floor is now a clean, warm, and characterful feature of the room. The repairs blend seamlessly with the original boards, while the stain enhances the natural grain without overpowering it.
The final matt finish gives a modern, understated look while offering long-lasting protection.
