This project in Devon involved installing a light, natural engineered oak parquet floor in a classic herringbone pattern, finished with a single block border.

The Process
Subfloor Preparation
The existing concrete subfloor was assessed and found to be just within tolerance, meaning:
- No levelling compound required
- Surface prepared and cleaned thoroughly
- Ready for direct glue-down installation
Setting Out – The Critical Stage
Everything in a herringbone floor depends on the crown line.
We:
- Carefully established the centre line of the space
- Adjusted layout to account for uneven walls
- Ensured the pattern would run true throughout the property
This stage took time but it’s what separates average work from precision flooring.
Installation Process
- Installed using a flexible wood flooring adhesive
- Each block carefully aligned to maintain pattern consistency
- Used weights to secure boards while adhesive cured
Border and Detailing
Once the main field was complete:
- A single plank border was cut in
- All edges were scribed to match uneven farmhouse walls
- Achieved a tight, high-end finish despite irregular structure
Expansion Gap Solution (No Skirting)
With no skirting boards, we needed a clean but functional solution.
We installed:
- Hemp rope expansion joint
This allows:
- Natural seasonal movement
- A flexible edge that expands and contracts with the floor
- A unique, characterful finish suited to the property
