This solid teak parquet floor had come through a full property renovation, including changes to some of the fireplaces and door frames. As a result, several parquet blocks needed altering or replacing before we could begin the main restoration.
Time on site: 5 days
Area: 55m²
The starting point
The property had undergone extensive renovation work, and changes to the fireplace layout and door frames meant the surrounding parquet needed to be altered to suit the new arrangement.
We carried out the necessary parquet floor repairs first, replacing and adapting blocks where required before moving on to the sanding and restoration.
The sanding process
We worked through 40, 60 and 80 grit using the Lagler Hummel belt sander and Lagler Flip edger to level the floor and remove the old finish.
As with many older parquet floors, small gaps had developed between the blocks over the years. Rather than using a generic filler, we mixed resin with wood dust taken directly from the floor and trowelled it across the surface. This helps keep the repairs closely matched to the existing timber, both in colour and character.
We then completed the finer stages of the parquet floor sanding process at 100 and 120 grit using the Bona FlexiSand, leaving the teak ready for its new finish.
Choosing the finish
The client chose Treatex Hardwax Oil in Clear Satin – a classic choice for teak timber that allows the natural character of the wood to come through without masking it with a heavy stain.
The result
The finished floor has brought out the natural depth and grain of the teak beautifully, giving the parquet a warm, rich tone throughout.
It’s a great example of how much difference careful preparation can make when restoring an older parquet floor. From repairing and replacing blocks to properly filling the gaps and gradually sanding the timber, each stage contributes to the result.
