Wood floor installation methods

Before any wood floor installation begins, it is paramount that proper subfloor preparation has been carried out. The conditions, moisture content, and structural integrity of the subfloor all play a critical role in the performance and longevity of the finished floor. Failing to address issues such as uneven surfaces, excess moisture, or inadequate support can lead to problems including movement, noise, warping, or premature failure of the flooring system.

A thorough inspection and preparation process ensures the subfloor is clean, dry, level, and stable, providing a suitable foundation for installation.

Methods of Wood Floor Installation

There are three main methods of installing wood flooring:

  • Glue Down
  • Secret Nailed
  • Floated

Each method has its own advantages and is selected based on factors such as the type of subfloor, the flooring product, room conditions, and intended use of the space.

Glue Down Installation

Glue down wood floors are a popular choice for those seeking a permanent and stable flooring solution. This method involves adhering the wood flooring directly to the subfloor using a high-strength flooring adhesive.

It is particularly effective for installation over concrete subfloors, screeds, or other solid surfaces where nailing would not be feasible. The adhesive creates a strong bond between the wood and the subfloor, ensuring the flooring remains firmly in place and minimising movement over time.

Additional benefits of glue down installations include:

  • Improved stability for wider or longer boards
  • Reduced risk of hollow sounds underfoot
  • Enhanced sound insulation, resulting in quieter footfall noise
  • A solid, high-end feel underfoot

Wood flooring adhesives are available in both solvent-based and non-solvent formulations, with the choice depending on the specific requirements of the project, the type of wood flooring being installed, and environmental considerations.

Secret Nailed Installation

Secret nailed wood floors are a traditional and highly effective method of installation, most commonly used with tongue and groove flooring.

This technique involves fixing the boards to timber floor joists or a timber subfloor by nailing through the tongue of each board. Once the next board is installed, the fixings are concealed, resulting in a clean, seamless appearance with no visible nails or screws on the surface.

Key advantages of secret nailing include:

  • Strong mechanical fixing for long-term stability
  • A natural method that allows the wood to expand and contract
  • A classic installation technique suited to real wood floors
  • Excellent durability over time

Secret nailing requires a sound, well-prepared timber subfloor or joisted structure and is not suitable for direct installation onto concrete.

Floated Installation

Floated wood flooring is another popular method of installation, especially suitable for areas where traditional fixing methods may be impractical.

With this technique, the wood flooring is laid over a layer of underlay and is not fixed directly to the subfloor. Instead, the boards are joined to each other using a tongue-and-groove system or modern click-lock mechanism. This creates a single, unified floor surface that “floats” above the subfloor.

Benefits of floated installations include:

  • Faster installation time
  • No need for floor adhesives or mechanical fixings
  • Easier removal or replacement in the future
  • Improved acoustic performance when paired with suitable underlay

This method is commonly used with engineered wood flooring and laminate and is ideal for installations over underfloor heating systems, provided the correct materials and expansion gaps are used.

Choosing the Right Installation Method

Selecting the correct installation method depends on several key factors, including:

  • The type of wood flooring (solid or engineered)
  • The subfloor construction (concrete, timber, joists)
  • Moisture levels and environmental conditions
  • The size and layout of the room
  • Acoustic and thermal requirements
  • Future access or replacement needs

Professional assessment ensures the most appropriate method is chosen, delivering a stable, long-lasting, and visually flawless result.
