How much does wood flooring cost?

One of the first things people want to know is:

“How much is this actually going to cost me?”

And fair enough, it’s a big part of the decision.

The honest answer is it depends. But we can give you a realistic idea based on the wood flooring installation service we have provided for over 15 years in and around Somerset and across the South West.

The short answer

As a rough guide:

  • Engineered wood flooring (supplied & fitted)
    Around £60- £120 per m²
  • Solid wood flooring (supplied & fitted)
    Around £80 – £150+ per m²
  • Herringbone or patterned floors
    Usually higher due to labour

That’s a general ballpark. The final cost depends on quite a few factors.

What affects the price of wood flooring installation?

The biggest factor is the type of flooring.

  • Engineered wood
Wide range of prices, more budget-friendly options available
  • Solid wood
Higher material cost, more labour involved
  • Premium designs (herringbone, chevron)
More cutting, more time, higher labour cost

The quality of the product. Not all wood flooring is the same.

Things that affect price:

  • Thickness of the board
  • Wear layer (especially for engineered)
  • Finish quality
  • Grade of the wood (more knots vs cleaner look)

Cheaper options can look good at first, but don’t always last as well.

Subfloor preparation. This is where costs can vary quite a bit.

If your subfloor is already:

  • Flat
  • Dry
  • In good condition

Then you’re in a good place. If not, you might need:

  • Levelling compound
  • Damp proofing
  • Repairs to existing floor

This is essential work, not optional, and it affects the final cost.

Installation method

Different methods come with different costs.

  • Floating (click system)
    Usually quicker, lower labour cost
  • Glue-down
    More time and materials involved
  • Nail-down (solid wood)
    Skilled work, typically higher labour

Room size and layout

  • Simple, square rooms
    Faster to install
  • Lots of corners, doorways or awkward cuts
    Takes more time
  • Open-plan areas
Can be more efficient per m²

What extra costs people forget about

These can catch people out when budgeting:

  • Skirting boards or beading
  • Door trims
  • Threshold strips between rooms
  • Removal of old flooring
  • Waste disposal

It all adds up, so worth factoring in early.

What is the cost difference between DIY and Professional wood floor installation?

You can save on labour by fitting it yourself, but:

  • You’ll still have material and prep costs
  • You may need to buy or hire tools
  • Mistakes can end up costing more to fix

For straightforward jobs, DIY can work well. For anything more complex, professional fitting often saves hassle in the long run.

What do most people spend on wood flooring?

From what we see locally:

  • Typical project
£2,000 – £6,000 depending on size and spec
  • Single room
    Often £800 – £2,500+
  • Full ground floor / open plan
Can go much higher depending on finish and prep

Every job is different, but those are realistic ranges.

How to get the best value

It’s not always about going cheapest.

Better approach:

  • Choose a good quality floor that suits the room
  • Make sure the subfloor is done properly
  • Don’t cut corners on installation

That way, you get something that lasts and still looks good years down the line.
